‘Lover’s Eye’ was selected by the Society of Scottish Artists to be in the Insectarium exhibition at the Scottish Ornithologists Club, Aberlady, June-July 2021.
It was inspired by the late 17th Century tradition of having an artist paint your lover’s eye on to a piece of jewellery and then wearing it in a hidden place. Under a collar for example. This jewellery often took the shape of an insect or moth. The idea of eyes on insects is both compelling and repulsive, having your lover’s eye watching you always is both comforting and unnerving.
